It was one morning in 2017 when Somnath, then aged 9, was sitting with his mother in front of the house in a small village where the founder of we care was staying and the mother asked for help for her son.

Somnath suffers from the consequences of poliomyelitis, which he contracted as a small child. His legs are practically paralyzed and he can only move by crawling. Somnath is also mentally impaired and therefore dependent on extensive help from his mother. He is the only child in the family. They receive no help from his father.

We care then paid for the mother and son and an accompanying person to travel to Kolkata, where Somnath was examined at the state polio center. The two returned to their home village with a wheelchair and the recommendation that Somnath should receive physiotherapy treatment.

Unfortunately, the physiotherapy paid for by we care was not successful. As the treatment also caused Somnath pain, he bit both the therapist and his mother, so that the treatment had to be discontinued.

Today (2024) Somnath is 16 years old, has grown up and is of course quite a bit heavier, so that his mother's care is becoming more and more demanding, which is why we care decided to try physiotherapy again (with a woman). And lo and behold: the results are amazing (see also the video).

We care will continue the therapy - as suggested by the therapist - until the end of 2024.

At the moment, we care is supporting mother and son with a monthly donation in kind, which is delivered by our former teacher and coordinator. The photo shows just how happy Somnath is.
